When the Past Keeps Showing Up in the Present: Trauma Support and PTSD Therapy in Ontario
Book my FREE 20-min consultationSometimes the body reacts as if something is still happening, even when part of you knows you are safe. You might notice feeling on edge, easily startled, shut down, or overwhelmed in situations that do not seem to match the intensity of your reaction.
This can feel confusing and isolating, especially when you cannot fully explain why it is happening. Trauma support offers a space to slow things down, understand these responses, and begin to create a greater sense of safety and stability in the present.
You are not overreacting. Your system is responding in a way that once made sense.
You Don’t Have to Minimise What Happened
Trauma and PTSD-related experiences can show up in many ways. Some people notice hypervigilance, emotional shutdown, difficulty relaxing, nightmares, flashbacks, or a constant sense of being “on alert.” Others feel numb, disconnected, or as though they are going through life from a distance.
These responses can be confusing, especially when there is no obvious reason for them in the present moment.
Trauma can come from a single overwhelming event or from ongoing experiences that were difficult to escape or process at the time. It does not have to look a certain way to be valid or impactful.

How Trauma Support Therapy Can Help You Move Forward
The effects of trauma can show up in many ways, including feeling constantly on guard, emotionally overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck in patterns that no longer feel helpful. Trauma support therapy offers a space to better understand these responses and to explore what might help you feel safer, more grounded, and more connected in your life.
My work is grounded in trauma-informed care, meaning that therapy is guided by safety, choice, collaboration, and respect for your pace. Rather than assuming what you need, we pay attention to what feels manageable and supportive for your nervous system at the moment. For some people, that means focusing on grounding skills, identifying sources of support and resilience, and creating greater stability in daily life.
Depending on your goals and readiness, we may also draw from trauma-specific approaches such as EMDR, Brainspotting, or parts-oriented work informed by Internal Family Systems (IFS). These approaches can support the processing of experiences that continue to affect life in the present. Together, we can decide what feels most supportive, knowing that there is no single path to healing.
Throughout the process, we work with the concerns that brought you to therapy, whether that includes hypervigilance, intrusive memories, nightmares, emotional overwhelm, shutdown, or a persistent sense of feeling stuck. Different approaches can be helpful at different stages of healing. At times, therapy may focus on building resources, strengthening coping strategies, and creating greater stability. At other times, trauma-specific methods such as EMDR or Brainspotting may be appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is trauma support therapy covered by insurance in Ontario?
Many extended health benefit plans provide coverage for services offered by Registered Psychotherapists (RP). Coverage varies by provider, so it is best to check directly with your insurance company.
Do I need a PTSD diagnosis to get started?
No. You do not need a diagnosis to begin trauma support therapy. Many people seek support based on symptoms or lived experience rather than formal diagnosis.
How long does trauma therapy take?
There is no set timeline. Some people focus on stabilization and coping first, while deeper trauma processing may take longer and is always guided by readiness.
Is online trauma support as effective as in-person sessions?
Research suggests that online therapy can be effective for many people experiencing trauma-related symptoms, especially when safety and comfort are important factors.
What if I am not sure whether what I experienced counts as trauma?
That is completely okay. You do not need to label your experience in order to seek support. Therapy can help you understand how your experiences are affecting you now.
