When Relationships Feel Strained: Relationship Counselling in Ontario
Book my FREE 20-min consultationThere are times when relationships start to feel harder than they used to. Conversations become tense or careful. Distance grows, even when no one intends it to. You may find yourself feeling misunderstood, shut down, or unsure how to say what you need without things becoming strained.
Over time, it can start to feel like you’re stuck in repeating patterns, even when you genuinely want things to be different. Relationship counselling offers a space to slow things down, understand what is happening between you and others, and explore new ways of connecting that feel more steady and mutual.
When You Want Things to Be Different But Do Not Know How to Get There
Relationship struggles are not always about one single issue. More often, they show up in everyday moments: conversations that keep going off track, feeling unheard or misunderstood, pulling away when things feel tense, or trying harder but still not feeling closer.
These patterns can show up in romantic relationships, friendships, family relationships, and workplace dynamics. You may want closeness but find it difficult to reach. Or you may feel overwhelmed by closeness and unsure how to express boundaries without conflict or disconnection.
Noticing these patterns is an important first step. Knowing how to shift them is often the harder part.

How Relationship Counselling Can Help You Communicate and Connect
Relationship counselling is not about deciding who is right or wrong. It is about understanding the patterns that develop between people and finding new ways of relating that feel clearer, more connected, and more sustainable.
My role is to help slow things down enough to notice what happens in moments of tension or disconnection, and to explore how each person may be experiencing the situation differently.
My approach draws from systems theory, solution-focused therapy (SFBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and communication-focused techniques informed by Focusing. Rather than relying on a single method, therapy is guided by what feels most helpful for your situation, your goals, and your pace.
Together, we can explore the patterns that tend to repeat, develop more effective ways of communicating needs and boundaries, and support relationships that allow for both closeness and individuality.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is counselling for relationship issues covered by insurance in Ontario?
Many extended health benefit plans provide coverage for services offered by Registered Psychotherapists (RP). Coverage varies depending on your provider, so it is best to check directly with your insurance company.

No. You can attend individually. Many people begin relationship counselling on their own to better understand patterns, communication styles, and relational dynamics.

How long does relationship counselling take?
The timeline varies. Some people notice shifts within a few sessions, while deeper patterns may take longer to work through.
Is online relationship counselling as effective as in-person sessions?
Research suggests that online therapy can be as effective as in-person therapy for many concerns including relationship issues.
